So I have to share this theory I have. In thinking about the earth as a giant organism I kept getting stuck on the notion that humans resembled cancer in many respects. However, Lovelock got criticism of his idea of earth as an organism from other scientists because they said the hallmark of life is the ability to reproduce. And earth doesn't reproduce?

But consider this. 50,000 years from now( a geological heartbeat) humans will colonize Mars and boost the atmoshphere-bring all manner of life, and plants, and microbes, etc. and then Mars will wake up as a planetary entity. So earth/ Gaia created us as the species that traveles off planet into space in order for Gaia to reproduce. Thus, in the big scheme of things, we are spores.

    microcosm macrocosm

    how much of the earth has to be there for it to be a reproduction.

    is the space station a form of a bud ?

    I like this theory chris. I use a different analogy but I try to remember that the constraints of the analogy are probably less strange and wonderful than the actual reality of things ;-}

    Gaea stores fertility energy in the form of topsoil through photosynthetic and decomposition biomass generation... some of this may have been compressed to form oil...

    So as we ravage across the earth sucking up all the oil and stripping away all the topsoil, perhaps we're the germ in a seed consuming the starches, preparing to germinate ;-}

    We could be the appendages of Gaea through which it perceives itself, the seeds of intelligence to focus this energy of germination into one of magnificent galactic beauty!

    I really wish I were an optimist. Not only I am pretty sure at this point that we humans will not be here in 50,000 years, I do not necessarily consider that a bad thing. I think that the Great Mother of us all has had about as much of us as She can stand, and that's saying a lot since Her patience is beyond our human comprehension.
    She has to look at the good of the planet as a whole not just what is good for we extremely self centered humans, the vast majority of whom do not even consider themselves to be connected to this planet but somehow (?) separate. I have spoken to Mother and she is not above making a fist, of course the most loving fist imaginable. I do not say this lightly. I have given Her my life-force in a blood ceremony. When I did this I only knew it was the right thing to do and I did it out of an immense gratitude to Her. Afterwards, strictly personal spiritual help in the form of messages begin to turn occasionally into universal messages about us and our planet. She is not so enamored of us as we are of ourselves but yet She is still trying to help us to help the planet. She is pure love and has not given up on us yet but I clearly sense limits here. I am skeptical of the idea that our consciousness has evolved as Gaia's way of comprehending herself. It could be because of my own limited intelligence but my experience is that She very well comprehends everything for Herself and is more "conncected" to the plant world than the animal world. For me, it has been through the plants that She communicates.
    She only asks us to stop working against Her and work with Her and it appears that the necessity of this is very great at this time.

      Plants must be her true connection.. they call the Earth home.. she is their shelter, water, supporting roots and allowing all plants to network together.

      Humans.. as well as most animals create their Own shelter. This is to say we have lost and lack the higher connection due to our reliance on ourselves to get us through lives.. when the real happiness lies in putting our full Faith in Her. We are in majority a concrete scab on the earth.

      The best step toward direct contact with meaning of substance is to gather Her products as they originate unprocessed and begin the life of true sustainability.

      And yes, I do believe the space station is the fruit (sporazoa) of human labors to conquer life's "inconsistencies"
      "I'd like to live beneath the Dirt" - Phish on the matter.. perhaps this had been their lyrical inspiration.. True reliance and faith in the guiding and providing organism. Brown gritty dirt has never seemed so vividly Alive

      I notice quite a few folks talking about communicating with Gaia but my opinion is that Gaia is conscious and self aware as an entity-and this consciousness is so far beyond what our tiny minds could grasp that it is impossible to communicate directly with the entity. Kind of like-have you had a lucid conversation lately with the skin cell on your left thumb.

        uncle heart says hello, chris - the way to mother is through the skin cell on left thumb, not conscious mind

        That " ...I have spoken to motherand she...." was not my post!-don't know who that delusional shithead is. My post begins there with "I notice..."

    You been reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy or you come up with this on your own?

    Learn about areoformation from Blue Mars, terraforming from Green Mars, and spores from Red Mars.

    Haha! I'm listening to a song about the last man on Mars.

    AWESOME theory.

    Now I posit you, this: magic mushrooms as from outer space -wise life traveling the cosmos linking individuals closer to our Gaia mind as well as to networks of energy connected with 'alien' species - us to other beings to other Gaia minds. Of multi-layered dimensional existences and our technology as the means of realizing our-self.
